By March 16th 2008 it looked as though Phil Thompson might
score his 600th goal on the same day as Archie was to make
his 600th appearance. The Reserves had a home fixture in
Division 4 against Ashcroft Athletic, who were in a lowly
position in the table and against whom Phil had scored five
in the away fixture! Unfortunately in the 3 days leading up
to the fixture it hardly stopped raining and the game was
one of the very few at Pirton to fall foul of a waterlogged
pitch.
The following week, March 23rd, was an early Easter
in 2008 and...it snowed and all games were again called off.
Finally, after a 3 week wait the Reserves played against
Dynamo Old Boys at Lewsey Park. Archie was sure to make his
600th appearance, but would Phil score the magic 600th goal?
The answer came after 20 seconds when Phil hit a
speculative shot that beat the Dynamo keeper. He went on to
score 3 more goals in a 6-0 win for the Reserves. 603 goals
in 582 matches.
The feat was recorded in the Luton News and Hitchin Comet
and even made the headlines on the Hertfordshire FA website
- recognition from the footballing authorities at last for a
fantastic achievement for both players.
